News Key Terms 

Context - the circumstances that form the setting for an event, statement, or idea, and in terms of which it can be fully understood.

Subsidary - less important than but related or supplementary to something.

Mid-market TabloidA middle-market newspaper is a newspaper that attempts to cater to readers who like entertainment as well as the coverage of important news events.

Rhetoric - the art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing, especially the exploitation of figures of speech and other compositional techniques.

Ombudsman - An ombudsman, ombudsperson, ombud, or public advocate is an official who is charged with representing the interests of the public by investigating and addressing complaints of mal-administration or a violation of rights.

Hyperbole - exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally.

Progressives - an advocate of social reform.

Dual Convergence - the interconnection of information and communications technologies, computer networks and media content.

Platform - media platform is a service, site, or method that delivers media to an audience. It's functions are to deliver, but also sometimes to allow for feedback, discussion, or sharing.

Ofcom - The Office of Communications, commonly known as Ofcom, is the government-approved regulatory and competition authority for the broadcasting, telecommunications and postal industries of the United Kingdom. 

Soft News - Soft media comprises organisations that primarily deal with commentary, entertainment, arts and lifestyle. Soft media can take the form of television programs, magazines or print articles.

Hard News - A definition of Hard news is very time sensitive. It's very serious news of widespread import, concerning politics, foreign affairs, or the like. It is distinguished from routine news items, feature stories, or human-interest stories.

Hegemony - leadership or dominance, especially by one state or social group over others.

Dominant Group - The classic sociological definition of dominant group is a group with power, privileges, and social status. Another related definition is a social group that controls the value system and rewards in a particular society. The dominant group is often in the majority but not necessarily.

Journalism - the activity or profession of writing for newspapers, magazines, or news websites or preparing news to be broadcast.
