Newspaper Review 25th March 2020

Masthead - the title of the newspaper displayed on the front page
The masthead connotes the Daily Express brings news quickly to readers everyday, making it valuable, important and reliable.

Headline - the title given to the story, usually a brief, catchy summary of the main ideas and/or themes of the news item that encourages the reader to read the article
The headline is a simple, straightforward statement. It's placement on top of the main image anchors the two and connotes the national significance of the tests that the UK will receive.

Sub-heading - usually shorter than the main headline and provides additional information about the story that will also appeal to the reader.
The two sub-headings below the heading quickly summarise the story using statistics, connoting the Daily Express is reliable and succinct with news.

Splash - a large image and/or headline 'splashed' taking up the majority of the front page
the text and image are splashed across over half of the cover, connoting the story's importance.

Lead story - the main story on the front page; it may be the only story or the one that takes up the most space - the lead story can also be called a splash
Tests for coronavirus, and its size on the page, connotes that this is the most important news of the day, politically, culturally and socially.

Stand first - the first paragraph of a news story that summarises the whole story - it is usually bold and in a slightly larger font, so it stands out
The stand first summarises the paper's point of view in relation to the main story and positions the audience  to read the rest of the story from the same perspective, so that they acdept the connotations and viewpoints offered by the paper.

Byline - the name of the articles author
Sam Lister, the Deputy Political Editor of the Daily Express, a white, middle-class, British woman, has written the article. This is authoritative and can be seen to be reinforcing the dominant voice in society of white, middle class, British people.
